Why You Should Buy A Classic Car

Is owning a classic car for you?

There are many people out there currently flicking through a classic car magazine or watching one of the many classic car restoration shows thinking I would really like one of those. There are also many people out there about to buy a modern car.

We run a 1961 Jaguar Mk2 as a daily driver and let me tell you a choice between this and a 3 year old family hatch or saloon is no real choice at all.

When people think of classic’s they think of an old car at the side of the road doing its very own steam dance and while this may be true of many it is not a requirement of ownership.

You see there are many classics that are affordable even when you factor in the maintenance and running cost’s and in many cases parts are cheaper than on the modern car.

Classic car running cost’s

You see there are many classics that are affordable even when you factor in the maintenance and running cost’s and in many cases parts are cheaper than on the modern car.

For example a replacement wing mirror for a new ford focus comes in at £73.53 while one for a mark 2 Jag is £17.00. That difference stands up right across the parts range but it gets better.

As your new classic car will not have all the toys that a modern car has it has far less to go wrong and opening the engine bay reviles an engine and not a plastic cover hiding a computer port. This means that almost any garage can work on it, even you if you feel like it. I say feel like it because you have to want to get a little oily but there is a satisfaction to doing it.

There are two more huge financial benefits to buying and running a classic car. The first is insurance and this in many countries is classed as “Classic Car Insurance” and is a lot cheaper than normal insurance.

The second reason and the one that will make you smile to yourself as you fall asleep each night is the car’s value. If you loo after it 99% of classic cars will be worth at worst what you paid for them after 5 years and maybe a little bit more. Never ever buy one hoping it goes up and makes you a profit but at the same time watching the value of the modern car you almost bought 5 years ago is a nice feeling.
